Michael S. Shapiro, Ph.D.

Dr. Michael Shapiro is a psychologist in private practice in Athens, Georgia.  He is also on the Faculty of Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia.  He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, autism, and closed-head trauma.  He also conducts forensic assessments involving child custody, parental fitness, competence to stand trial, and other litigation issues.  Dr. Shapiro obtained his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Neuropsychology at the University of Georgia.  He interned in the Department of Pediatric Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia and has been in private practice since 1988.  Dr. Shapiro is a Board Certified Forensic Examiner and a Registered Custody Evaluator.  He holds Diplomate status in the American Board of Vocational Neuropsychology, the American Board of Psychological Specialties, the Professional Academy of Custody Evaluators, and the American Board of Forensic Medicine.  He has been published in journals such as the Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology and the Journal of Developmental Neuropsychology.

 

Mary M. Shapiro, Ph.D.

Dr. Mary Shapiro is a licensed psychologist who received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and adolescent counseling and psychotherapy.  She completed internships at the Medical College of Georgia Department of Neurology, the Adolescent Program at Georgia Regional Hospital in Atlanta, and the Evans Psychoeducational Center.  Dr. Shapiro has worked extensively with severely emotionally disturbed children and learning disabled children and adolescents; as well as with chronically ill and multiply handicapped children.  Dr. Shapiro specializes in the diagnosis and psychotherapeutic treatment of child and adolescent behavior disorders, mood disorders, and conduct disorders. She is board certified in Child Psychology by the American Board of Psychological Specialties.  She has been published in the Journal of Child Psychiatry and Human Development.

 

Together, the Shapiros have lectured extensively (both domestically and abroad) on topics related to child psychology, parenting, marriage, adoption, and mental health issues in a Christian context.  They have authored two publications for Discipleship Press International; “Rejoice Always:  A Manual for Christians Facing Emotional Challenges” and “Understanding Sexual Behavior in Children:  How to be Proactive in Educating and Protecting your Children.”
