A CJCOC Program Combating Hunger

"'He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?' Declares the Lord."
Jeremiah 22:16

Did you know?

  • Many of our brothers and sisters in our hemisphere live in extreme poverty.

  • Many of them and their children go to bed hungry because they do not have enough resources for food.

  • Many of them cannot buy medicine for themselves of their children.

  • Many of them drink water full of parasites and bacteria.

  • Many attend schools where more than 34% of teachers are qualified to teach and gang violence takes the lives of children.

Now that you do know, you may ask "Why does God allow it? God is asking Christians the same question, "Why do we allow it?"

Not knowing has never been an excuse.

"For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in."

~ Matthew 25:35

Jesus’ Response:

"The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’ “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Matthew 25:40-46

I Was Hungry Impact Update:

Dear I Was Hungry supporter,

As we near the end of another year and enter the season of Thanksgiving and resolutions, we at I Was Hungry (IWH) “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good” (Psalm 136).  We have abundant reasons to be grateful for we have witnessed His goodness through the impact of your generosity.  On behalf of all the families you have supported over the years and especially the last two years, we thank you!

Here is a brief summary of the impact your donations have had to date this year:

  • IWH has wired $145,897 in donations to needy families

  • IWH currently supports families in 13 churches in 7 countries:  Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Venezuela

  • IWH donations have provided food for approximately 269 families (or 925 people) each quarter of this year

When we rallied for your support in March of 2020, we had no idea you would donate enough to support many of the extra families we took on during the early stages of the pandemic and carry them all the way through the end of 2021.   God blew us away!

The global pandemic persists, however. Pandemic-related hardships as well as natural disasters have put families in extreme poverty conditions in even more desperate situations.  Although your Covid-19 emergency support donations supplied food for many extra families through to the end of this year, currently we have donors committed to supporting only about 170 families.

I Was Hungry now faces the challenge of continuing support for these additional families and hope that we can rely on you, once again, to help us sustain assistance to some of the most needy in our family of churches.

How can you help?

You can help by praying for I Was Hungry.  We are a small, volunteer-run program which sends 100% of your donations to the churches we support in Latin America; $4 of the $44 goes to support a brother or sister who runs the program locally in each church.  The administration takes the effort of many willing helpers and the program depends on the generosity of many willing hearts!

You can help by sharing the message of I Was Hungry.  Help us combat hunger within the church by sending others to our Facebook page or website (to donate, click on Donate Now button).  Helping us bring awareness helps our mission!

You can help by adding I Was Hungry to your gift-giving list this season.  If your previous donation was for emergency support only, please consider another one-time donation or opting to support a family for another year.

You can help by continuing to sponsor  I Was Hungry.  Your donation truly makes a difference to disciples who receive the monthly stipend to feed their families.  For those who have been ongoing, faithful supporters of this program, we are sincerely grateful for you!

Our prayers are that God will do more than we can imagine and raise not only the funds needed but surpass that number so we can continue in our mission to feed brothers and sisters throughout our churches.

Thank you again for your support of I Was Hungry  and your love for the poor.

1 John 3:16-17

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?"

About the I Was Hungry Ministry:

I Was Hungry was started five years ago to address the issue of hunger among our brothers and sisters, where the average disciple makes less than $13 a day and where children were going to sleep without eating all day. We wanted to hear Jesus say to us someday, "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat."

THE RESULTS: We have fed over 500 disciples throughout Central America, Mexico and are now adding Venezuela with a total of nine churches where members are being supported.

HOW: Disciples sponsor families of disciples and have the ability to communicate and build relationships with the family or individual they sponsor.

WHO: We prioritize by widows, elderly, disabled, sick, single moms, and other disciples in extreme poverty or temporary crisis. Those physically able to work are encouraged to learn English, computer skills, pursue higher education , sewing or other programs that become available as way of increasing their income and break break the cycle of poverty.

VISION: Our vision is that every church starts an I was Hungry ministry and sponsors a third world church so that someday there will not be a hungry disciple in the entire kingdom.

There are options for one-time giving and annual or monthly sponsorship of a family. 100% of tax-deductible donations go to the country where we serve. The I Was Hungry ministry is run by volunteers and all fees for wiring and PayPal/ fees are paid by the Central Jersey Church of Christ (with the option to cover your own fees). The work is overseen by the elders of the Central Jersey Church of Christ.

Thank you again.
